According to the Borough Tax Assessor, the Villa Maria land and buildings have an assessed value of $6,119,500, and the tax exemption for religious purposes was disallowed as of January 19, 2006. Even more interesting, the nonprofit status of the group was revoked as of January 15, 2005, due to failure to file annual reports for two consecutive years.
During 2005, the North Plainfield property tax rate was 4.820 per $100 of assessed value.
So for 2005, the nuns owed the Borough approximately $294,959.90.
During 2006, the North Plainfield property tax rate was 5.170 per $100 of assessed value.
So for 2006, the nuns owed the Borough $316,378.15.
I can’t find info. on the 2007 tax rate, but presumably it’s about the same as last year’s, so that would be about another $237,283.61 through the end of September 2007.
Grand total: $848,621.66 in property taxes owed to the Borough. That’s a nice chunk of change that would help with a lot of sorely needed improvements around town.
Has it been paid? We’ll find out… If not, it could be a lien on the property if the nuns try to sell out: more leverage for the Borough in getting an ecologically and historically sound project put together for that site.
