Article about the progress of the reauthorization of the No Child Left Behind Act.
Gov. Corzine is putting out a proposal to recalibrate the school funding formulas. The district by district details of the plan haven’t come out yet, but it would probably be good for North Plainfield, with our high proportion of low family incomes among the student population.
But property tax-based funding, and adjusting those state v. local funding formulas to more accurately match the income levels of the communities, is only one piece of the complex problems facing public education.
Those problems also include the “one size fits all” character of the NCLB and the unfunded mandates within that law.
It would be interesting to learn what some of our School Board members think about both the Corzine proposals and the NCLB reauthorization.
