Municipal Clerk position finally filled

April 7, 2009 · 3 Comments

… by a Borough resident, Richard Phoenix, who has been the Deputy Clerk for many years and DOES have the RMC certification. I’m wondering what took them so long since the last clerk retired before the New Year?

I think what I find … humorous? is that it says that 200 candidates were considered before they ended up hiring the person who had been the assistant all along. Yet a little over a year ago, when a position came open in the tax office, no one in town apparently ever heard about the availability of the position, and they hired a current employee’s wife; no way they went through “200 candidates” to do that.

Let’s face it, hiring downtown is handled in about the same highly organized and impartial way that appointments via the Talent Bank are. Even though that whole system’s been proved as a boondoggle, it goes merrily on without oversight. And it’s particularly ridiculous with so many people seeking work.

By the way, what’s this stuff about the new Chief Clark being an employee of both Plainfield and North Plainfield? Another ‘double dipping’ situation, perhaps? With so many people out of work, once again are we finding one person with multiple paid/pensioned positions?

Nope, I’m not a double-dipper if you must know. I have served the City of Plainfield as a professional services provider paid on an hourly basis, no benes., no runs, no hits, no errors and none left on. For the time I served as North Plainfield’s Deputy Clerk, you might be interested to know that my part-time pay from the City of Plainfield just about covered my North Plainfield property tax. Double dipping? Sure, if they’re mashed potatoes from scratch or you got an ice cream flavour I like. Now, aren’t you glad you asked?

That was my insinuation, and I owe you an apology for surmising, Mr. Phoenix. I hope you’ll accept my apology. If there’s any ‘explanation,’ it simply might be that we DO have some people earning money from North Plainfield who’ve built up quite nice annual salaries holding positions with multiple communities … as well as some individuals who hold multiple titles/positions in our town (though whether they adequately perform any of them is a whole ‘nother topic), building up quite a nice pension in the process.

Nonetheless, implying guilt by association is not excusable on my part.

But I am glad I asked (like the old bumper sticker used to say – ‘Question Authority’), because I learned the facts. You showed integrity by responding. Perhaps you could encourage some of your coworkers downtown to do likewise.
